Willis Carrier, known as the “father of air conditioning”, invented the first cooling system in 1902. We think of air conditioning as a way to get relief from the heat, but its impact on society expands greatly beyond keeping our homes cool.

Just think, without air conditioning we wouldn’t have our laptops or the Internet.
So how exactly does this modern marvel operate? In essence, by stripping away humidity: air conditioners blow out cool air while simultaneously pulling out heat.
Air conditioners are composed of four main parts: an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser and an expansion device.
The evaporator’s cold pipes cool the air as it passes through. The coils are filled with refrigerant, which changes from a liquid to a gas as it absorbs heat from the air.
The refrigerant is pumped outside the house to another coil, the condenser, where the gas changes back into a liquid. A pump, called a compressor, moves the refrigerant between the two coils to change the pressure of the refrigerant to ensure it evaporates or condenses in the appropriate coils.
Lastly, the expansion device regulates the flow of liquid refrigerant into the evaporator, where just as before, it will absorb heat and change phase from a liquid into a low-pressure gas.
